Accutane, a cystic acne drug designed to treat serious skin conditions, was often prescribed for minor breakouts and acne. The drug, called isotretinoin generically, is associated with a wide range of side effects including severe problems of the gastrointestinal tract. Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and ulcerative colitis are among the principal complaints brought against Roche Pharmaceuticals, the medication’s manufacturer. In 2009, Roche discontinued sales due to mounting evidence and consumer complaints.

Patients Report Wide Range of Accutane Side Effects

Accutane may cause mild and severe side effects. On the minor end of the scale, the drug is linked to rash, skin irritations, dry eyes and headaches. Less commonly, it may cause depression, birth defects, hepatitis and joint pain. However, some of of the most cited and life-changing side effects are related to the gastrointestinal tract.

Crohn’s disease is thought to be an autoimmune disease. Unlike healthy immune systems, which protect the body by destroying invader cells, immune systems affected by Crohn’s disease attack healthy cells in the digestive tract. As a result, patients with Crohn’s experience chronic pain, diarrhea and vomiting. Ulcers of the intestines and stomach may also occur.

There is no cure for Crohn’s disease, IBD or ulcerative colitis after using Accutane. Treatment options, which include medication, diet and other therapies, have limited effect. In severe cases, victims of digestive disorders will have no choice but to undergo surgical removal of the colon, a measure that is both life changing and drastic. Accutane Lawsuits Double within Six Months

Between May 2011 and November 2011, Accutane lawsuits doubled in number, jumping from 3,268 to 6,479. Since experts report that side effects can appear after discontinuing treatment, more victims are expected to come forward with lawsuits in the coming months and years.

A mass tort lawsuit has been filed in New Jersey’s Atlantic County. The mass tort serves to consolidate similar lawsuits, in this case, complaints filed by victims who have experienced similar or same side effects, and who are seeking related compensation from Roche Pharmaceuticals.

To combat mounting claims, Roche has funded university research into adverse side effects from using Accutane. The pharmaceutical company hopes to provide evidence that its drug does not cause the side effects outlined in various lawsuits.
